How Much Does an HR Consultant Cost?

Every growing business eventually reaches a crossroad. Your team is expanding, your employee paperwork is piling up, and employment law changes are starting to keep you up at night. You need expert human resources support, but you aren’t quite ready to take on the massive overhead of a full-time, in-house HR Manager.

Naturally, your first question is: How much does an HR consultant cost?

The short answer is that it depends entirely on how you choose to work with them. Each consultancy is different in their pricing and level of coverages.

In the UK, HR consultancy fees typically fall into two main structures: fixed monthly retainers or flexible hourly rates.

To help you budget effectively, we have broken down exactly what you can expect to pay, how the pricing models work, and how to choose the right fit for your business.

The Two Main Ways to Pay for HR Support

Most businesses choose between an ongoing safety net or a pay-as-you-go approach. Here is how the costs break down:

1. Monthly HR Retainers (Best for Ongoing Peace of Mind)

An HR retainer is an ongoing monthly agreement where you pay a flat monthly fee to secure a set amount of consultant time, advice, or software access. It functions like an insurance policy for your business - giving you legal compliance, up-to-date contracts and a dedicated expert on hand whenever a staff issue pops up.

  • Our Retainers Start From: £200 per month (+ VAT) (quotes are based on the expected amount of work needed for your team size and needs).
  • The Setup Fee: Please note there is an initial, one-off setup cost when you launch a retainer with us. This covers the heavy lifting at the start - auditing your current documents, aligning your business with current UK employment law and getting your core templates ready to use.

This is the most cost-effective option for small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) because it gives you predictable monthly budgeting and prevents small issues from escalating into expensive legal disputes.

2. Hourly Rates (Best for Quick Advice or Small Projects)

If you only have a one-off issue - such as needing a quick contract review, a single advice call regarding an employee dispute, or guidance on a specific policy - an hourly or day rate is the most transparent option. You simply pay for the exact time you use.

  • Our Hourly Rate is: £150 per hour (+ VAT)
  • Our Day Rate is: £525 per day (+VAT)

Retainer vs. Hourly vs. In-House

To help you see the big picture, here is a look at how outsourcing your HR compares to hiring a full-time in-house employee (which easily averages £45,000–£60,000+ per year plus  factoring in national insurance, pensions, and overheads).

Complete Transparency: No Hidden Fees

We believe in 100% transparency. There are absolutely no hidden costs in our pricing.

However, because every business requires a slightly different level of support, there are a couple of specialist, optional services that sit outside our standard retainer packages:

  • Our Dedicated HR Software System: If you wish to use our specialist HR software to manage staff holiday requests, track absences, and store employee records digitally, this is available as an additional cost.
  • Settlement Agreements: Because a settlement agreement is a highly sensitive, formal legal process used to mutually dissolve an employment relationship, managing this end-to-end procedure will incur an additional fee.
  • Recruitment: We are not recruiters, but can assist when you may need the support. We will bring in an expert recruiter where needed.
  • Training: We offer a number of Leadership and Management Training modules.
  • Coaching: 1:1 and Group coaching for current and future leaders. Please feel free to ask for a quote, separate from the HR packages.

All HR consulting costs quoted are subject to standard UK commercial tax rules. For your budgeting purposes, remember that all our stated costs are plus VAT.

Which Option is Right for Your Business?

  • Choose a Retainer if: You want to protect your business from tribunals, ensure your employee handbooks are always legal, and have a trusted expert just a phone call away without watching the clock.
  • Choose Hourly if: You already have a handle on basic HR but have hit a rare, specific roadblock that requires a few hours of expert intervention to sort out.
  • Still unsure?: Ask us for a FREE HR Audit. We will take a deep dive into your unique business setup, uncover your current HR needs and critical pain points, and generate a clear roadmap of exactly what you need to stay compliant and protected.
